India Approves ₹1.86 Lakh Crore Renewable Energy Programme

The Government of India has approved a major ₹1.86 lakh crore programme aimed at expanding and strengthening the country's renewable-energy transmission infrastructure. The initiative is expected to play an important role in connecting new solar and wind power projects with the national electricity grid and improving the capacity of states to transmit clean energy.

According to the reported plan, around ₹1.36 lakh crore will be directed towards strengthening transmission systems within states. The programme is designed to support the evacuation of up to 135 GW of renewable energy, helping electricity generated from renewable sources reach consumers and industrial centres more efficiently.

The move comes as India continues to increase its renewable-energy capacity and reduce its dependence on conventional sources of electricity. Solar and wind power projects are being developed across several parts of the country, creating a growing need for stronger transmission networks. Upgrading these networks is also expected to help reduce congestion and improve the reliability of electricity supply.

The government has been focusing on expanding clean-energy infrastructure as part of India's broader energy-transition strategy. The new programme is therefore expected to support future renewable-energy projects while strengthening the country's overall power infrastructure.
