INDIA Bloc Leaders Chart Protest Strategy Over Alleged 'Vote Chori', Demand CEC Resignation at High-Tea Meet

NEW DELHI — In a move to consolidate opposition efforts, top leaders of the INDIA bloc, spearheaded by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, Sonia Gandhi, and Rahul Gandhi, held a strategic high-tea meeting at the latter’s 5, Sunehri Bagh Road residence on Tuesday, October 13, 2026. The gathering focused heavily on charting the alliance's future course of action regarding allegations of "vote chori" (vote theft) and the mounting demands for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Gyanesh Kumar.

The meeting brought together not just prominent political figures of the opposition alliance, but also representatives from various student organizations and civil society groups. The inclusion of civic groups indicates the opposition's intent to frame the ongoing protests as a broader "people's movement" to protect democratic institutions.

Taking to social media platform X (formerly Twitter) ahead of the meeting, Rahul Gandhi emphasized the unity of the opposition front, stating, "In this people's movement to protect democracy, we are all together - and this movement will continue relentlessly". Following the internal deliberations, the leaders planned a unified media address to present their collective stance on the issue.

The high-tea meeting follows a period of intense street-level demonstrations and legal maneuvering by the INDIA bloc. The opposition has actively taken to the streets of the capital, culminating in a recent protest march directed toward the Supreme Court, while their legal representatives concurrently filed a petition formally challenging the Election Commission and naming CEC Gyanesh Kumar, along with Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi, as parties in the case.

By bringing political allies and civic activists to the same table, the INDIA bloc aims to sustain the momentum of their protests, increasing pressure on the Election Commission while keeping the allegations of electoral misconduct at the forefront of national political discourse.
