Big Relief for Mobile Users: Govt Mandates 30-Day Recharge Validity, Ends 28-Day Cycle
a major victory for mobile subscribers across the country, the government has officially implemented the 'Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026'. Telecom operators are now required to provide full 30-day validity on recharge plans instead of the standard 28 days. This shift means consumers will only need to recharge their mobile phones 12 times a year, effectively saving them the cost of an extra 13th month.

Bringing an end to a long-standing consumer grievance, a massive overhaul in mobile telecom recharge plans has been officially announced. The government has rolled out the 'Telecom Consumers Protection (Thirteenth Amendment) Regulations, 2026', directing telecom companies to shift their baseline recharge validity from 28 days to a complete 30 days.

The development was highlighted on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter) by Member of Parliament Raghav Chadha (noted in the local report as BJP MP), who shared the details of this consumer-friendly regulatory change.
For years, telecom operators have utilized a 28-day validity cycle for standard monthly prepaid plans. Because of this calculation, a standard year of 365 days required consumers to recharge 13 times instead of 12 (28 days x 13 = 364 days). With the implementation of the new 2026 regulations, the artificial 13th-month recharge burden has been eliminated. Subscribers will now get a full 30-day cycle, ensuring that annual recharges are strictly capped at 12 times a year.

In addition to the extended validity, the new regulations bring another piece of good news for non-internet users. The government has mandated the launch of highly affordable, voice-only recharge plans. These cheaper plans are designed specifically for consumers who rely solely on calling features and do not want to be forced into paying for expensive bundled data packages.
This move is expected to bring significant financial relief to millions of prepaid mobile consumers, particularly lower-income groups and the elderly, who primarily use voice services. Telecom operators have been instructed to update their portfolios to reflect these new 30-day and voice-only options immediately.
