A devastating tragedy struck the capital city of Odisha on Day as seven members of an extended family hailing from the Jayadev Vihar area in Bhubaneswar drowned after their vehicle was swept away in a torrential stream at Nalkheda in Madhya Pradesh’s Agar Malwa district.
The family had embarked on a pilgrimage to visit the famed Maa Baglamukhi Temple, located near Ujjain, when the mishap occurred.
Recklessness Amid Rising Waters:
According to local administration officials in Agar Malwa, the tourists were travelling by car towards Nalkheda. The area had been witnessing heavy flow across low-lying crossings and causeways fed by upstream cascades.
Eyewitness accounts and preliminary police findings suggest that the driver attempted to negotiate an inundated causeway despite warning signs and rapidly rising water levels. The intense current quickly overpowered the vehicle, dragging it off the road into deep waters before the occupants could escape.
Rescue teams and local divers were mobilized to the spot, but by the time the vehicle was recovered downstream, all seven occupants had succumbed.
An Irreparable Family Loss:
Back in Bhubaneswar, the incident has cast an overwhelming pall of gloom over Jayadev Vihar. The deceased comprise multiple generations of a single extended household.
Among the dead are the family's son, grandson, and granddaughter, along with a married daughter, her husband (son-in-law), and their young child. Adding to the heartbreak, an unmarried daughter of the family was also among the victims. Family acquaintances revealed that her ring ceremony (engagement) had been finalized and was scheduled to take place in just a few days. The pilgrimage was intended as an auspicious visit to seek divine blessings ahead of the wedding festivities.
Coordination for Repatriation:
Local authorities in Madhya Pradesh have dispatched the bodies for post-mortem examinations at a nearby civil hospital. Meanwhile, the Odisha State Administration and local district representatives are coordinating with Madhya Pradesh authorities to complete legal formalities and facilitate the repatriation of the mortal remains back to Bhubaneswar for last rites.
