In a transformative move for Odisha’s industrial and healthcare landscape, Vedanta Group Chairman Anil Agarwal announced a massive ₹1 lakh crore investment plan on Saturday. The declaration followed a high-level strategic meeting with Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi at the Lok Seva Bhavan, focusing on robust industrial expansion, localized job creation, and substantial community infrastructure.

Healthcare Push in Western Odisha

Reiterating Vedanta's commitment to social infrastructure, Agarwal proposed the establishment of a cutting-edge 1,000-bed hospital in Western Odisha. Designed to serve the region's tribal and local communities, the facility is envisioned to include advanced research capabilities to treat major diseases and elevate the region's healthcare standards.

Industrial Expansion in Jharsuguda

At the core of the industrial investment is the expansion of Vedanta's footprint in Jharsuguda. The company plans to construct a massive 2 MTPA aluminium smelter plant. To facilitate this rapid expansion, the state government has already allocated 500 acres of land adjacent to Vedanta's existing power infrastructure. The project, slated for completion within three years, aims to strengthen Odisha's position as a premier global aluminium hub.

Fast-Tracking Mining Operations

To ensure a continuous and secure supply of raw materials for the expanded smelter and refinery operations, the meeting highlighted the urgent need to operationalize regional mineral sources. Specific discussions were held on expediting operations at the Sijimali and Karlapat bauxite mines. Activating these blocks is considered crucial for sustaining the increased production capacity and maximizing economic value within the state.

Employment and Economic Impact

The proposed investment is expected to act as a major catalyst for regional economic development. According to Agarwal, the expansion plans will generate an estimated 50,000 direct and indirect employment opportunities. Furthermore, the massive influx of capital is expected to cultivate a competitive ecosystem for Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs), supporting ancillary businesses in logistics, engineering, and downstream manufacturing.

Agarwal noted that with continued cooperation and swift administrative clearances from the state government, the execution of these mega-projects will commence immediately, driving Odisha's next phase of industrialization.
